Annual Column Awards Honor Dallas - Ft. Worth Theatre

AEA members Dennis Yslas with Anthony Rapp

The Dallas/Ft. Worth theatre awards season ended with the 7th Annual Column Awards presented on February 26, 2006 at the Courtyard Theatre in Plano, Texas. Equity member Dennis Yslas, who is also on The Column Awards Advisory Board, reports that this year's theme was A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Columns, and the show included parodies of Brokeback Mountain and a host of reality TV shows. Special guest was Equity member Anthony Rapp, from the original cast of RENT.

The Column Awards were created by John Garcia, Founder/Executive Director of The Column Online, an internet theatre news column. The Column started as a simple e-mail to friends that grew in popularity and now has a membership of approximately 7,000 readers. Mr. Garcia began honoring performers and productions in his column and this grew into a full scale presentation event.

The Column Awards encompass all theatre companies in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area--Equity and non-Equity--and are voted by the membership of The Column. Two memorial awards also are presented and voted on by The Column Advisory Board: The Ben Brettell Youth Award and the Kathleen Freeman Award. These honor colleagues who persevered through rough times and continued to perform. There is also an award for excellence in dance--The Chita Rivera Dance Award. Ms. Rivera sends a letter of congratulations to the recipient to accompany the award.

Here are the Equity members who received awards: Chamblee Ferguson, Best Actor Musical, A MAN OF NO IMPORTANCE, Uptown Players; Pamela Peadon, Best Actress Musical, A MAN OF NO IMPORTANCE, Uptown Players; Kia Dawn Fulton, Best Supporting Actress Musical, RAGTIME, Lyric Stage; Doug Miller, Best Director Musical, A MAN OF NO IMPORTANCE, Uptown Players; Terry Vandivort, Best Supporting Actor Play, SOUTHER BAPTIST SISSIES, Uptown Players; Kevin Scott Keating, Best Stage Manager Play, THE UNDERPANTS, Plano Repertory Theatre; Jac Alder, Best Scenic Design Play, MEMTAMORPHOSES, Theatre Three.
