The Show Goes On at North Shore Music Theatre Despite Devastating Fire

Season Continues At Shubert Theatre in Boston

ABYSSINIA To Open On Schedule on August 23, 2005

The North Shore Music Theatre has announced that its upcoming production of ABYSSINIA will move to the Shubert theatre in Boston, opening on August 23rd as scheduled. The move was necessitated by a devastating fire that destroyed the stage on July 14, abruptly closing North Shore’s current production, CINDERELLA.

Fire at North Shore Music Theatre

North Shore Music Theatre Stage was destroyed by a devastating fire on July 14th 2005. The season is continuing at the Shubert Theatre in Boston.

“We may have suffered a serious setback, but North Shore Music Theatre's commitment to musical theater, and its patrons, is unstoppable,” said Artistic Director/Executive Producer Jon Kimbell, announcing the move. “We have been truly heartened at the outpouring of goodwill, optimism and support from everyone during this challenging period in our theater's history. That spirit is what will see us through to recovery.”

Executive Director Alan Eisenberg wrote to Artistic Director/Executive Producer Jon Kimbell on behalf of President Patrick Quinn and Equity, expressing relief that no one was injured, and sending "best wishes that performances will begin again very soon so that you can continue the long tradition of bringing the very best of theatre to Massachusetts audiences."

According to Senior Business Representative Rick Berg, the cast of CINDERELLA was paid out their one-week performance guarantee and released from their contracts, and returned home the weekend of the fire, in accordance with the "Performances Lost" provision of COST contract. The incoming cast will continue to be housed at the North Shore housing, which was unaffected by the fire, and transported as required to the theater on Tremont Street. Housing and per diem will not be affected by the change of venue.

Operating since 1955, NSMT is one of the largest Equity theatres in New England, with approximately 400,000 patrons annually. The theatre produces six musicals and a production of A CHRISTMAS CAROL annually on an Equity COST contract. NSMT has received numerous industry awards, including the Elliot Norton Awards and the Rosetta LeNoire award from AEA. For more information, visit www.nsmt.org.
