July 14, 2005 San Francisco Members Meet, Fill Seats on BAAC The San Francisco Bay Area members held their annual meeting on June 6, 2005 with 24 members in attendance and elected five members to the Bay Area Advisory Committee. Western Regional Director John Holly opened the meeting with a question and answer session and presented a financial state-of-the-union, talking about the number of current active members and the status of the Pension and Health Plans. Also discussed was the need for timely payment of dues and initiation fees. He reminded members that under no circumstances should they work without a contract and if they have any doubts or questions about contracts, contract status or rules, they should call the San Francisco or Los Angeles office to check. He also briefly discussed the rules and conditions for Temporary Withdrawal status. Bay Area Advisory Committee (BAAC) Chair Jerry Mark reported on the National Council meeting of Equity Councillors and Area Liaisons held in New York in mid-May. (A full report appeared in the June 2005 issue of Equity News.) Western Regional Vice-President Doug Carfrae characterized Equity as a grassroots organization, one in which the membership dictates policy through their elected representatives to Council. He described the chain of command on both the local and national levels, and how the work of the Union is done by committees of members. He encouraged all members to become involved in local committees and to volunteer to be the Equity Deputy for any production in which they are involved.
BAAC Election During the membership discussion period, questions were raised regarding the BAPP, M-BAT and BAT codes and agreements. Also, a request was made for more local information on the website and in Equity News. For more information about Equity activities in the Bay Area, contact the San Francisco office at 415-391-3838.
