Ray Lonergan Memorial Library Valuable Resource for AEA Members in Chicago
A library just for actors? That sounds like a dream! It's actually been a reality for the past 25 years at Actors' Equity here in Chicago. The Ray Lonergan Memorial Library was established in 1986 as the result of a generous donation from the family of the late actor/teacher Ray Lonergan. His collection formed the core of the library, which has grown over the years to more than 4,000 scripts and books thanks to the generosity of many including a large donation from Sidney Eden. It also contains sheet music, CD's, DVD's, video and audiocassettes, as well as some rare volumes to be used on premises. Our function is even more vital today due to the demise of so many bookstores, including Chicago's only Theatre bookstore. The library is run by a committee of hard working volunteers - Ira Carol, Diane Dorsey, Buddy King, Iris Lieberman (chair) and Connie McGrail. As we approach our silver anniversary, we are proud that we have never waivered from our original mission statement of "helping the actor get that job!" by providing a valuable resource for monologues, scene study and the opportunity to read a script before an audition. We thank Midwest Regional Director Kathryn Lamkey who remains a loyal advocate for the library. The move to our current home provides new space, new challenges and a rededication to the next 25 years. Visit our website www.LonerganLibrary.com for information on how to find and check out books, how to donate, or be a volunteer.
