NYC New Member Reception

"It's important to maximize the opportunity a show can provide."

--- Montego Glover, New Member Reception Guest Speaker

Montego Glover

The Fall New Member Reception was held in New York City on Monday October 8, 2012. Montego Glover, Tony Award® Nominee for the role of Felicia Farrell in the Broadway hit musical MEMPHIS was the guest speaker. Additionally her performance garnered the Outer Critics Circle Award and the Drama Desk Award as well as a Drama League Award Nomination. Ms. Glover received her Equity card in 1999.

Here are some quotes from her speech that wowed the crowded room:

"It's important to maximize the opportunity a show can provide. I chose to do that with MEMPHIS." Ms. Glover related how she leveraged the opportunity by hiring a publicist to help keep the positive buzz.

"Preserve your instrument - preserve your work." and "I think that as actors, we need to remember that work is work." Good advice for actors at any stage of their career.

"The theater is for athletes because it's relentless." Clearly thinking of their own daily performance challenges, many of the audience nodded in solid agreement.

In talking about how a career takes different twists, Ms. Glover shared these two insights:

"Spend your time making your notes, so when the opportunity comes, you are ready."

"Be patient. The different segments of your career will lay themselves out time."

Equity's newest Members received informational packets, learned about Equity Franchised Agents and took part in raffles featuring Equity, Actors Federal Credit Union and Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids (BC/EFA) giveaways.
