What’s the difference between an Equity audition and an “OPEN” audition?

Equity Principal Auditions (EPAs) and Equity Chorus Calls (ECCs) are auditions at which all Equity Members are seen on an equal basis. EPAs and ECCs may be required by the producer’s agreement with Equity; they may also be non-required auditions at which the producer chooses to observe Equity audition procedures. In New York, Chicago and Los Angeles, EPAs and ECCs are run by Equity Audition Monitors.

An OPEN audition is one at which Equity Members and non-Equity performers are seen on an equal basis. Equity neither runs OPEN calls nor provides Equity Audition Monitors for them. The producer (or casting director) runs all aspects of an OPEN call and is not bound by Equity’s audition procedures.
