There is an audition for an Equity Theatre listed in Back Stage (or another trade publication) but it’s not on Casting Call. Why is that?

There are a few possibilities:

1) That audition may be for non-Equity performers. Certain Equity companies may use some future Members in their productions. Producers may audition these performers at non-required, “OPEN” auditions. Producers aren’t required to tell Equity about auditions that are not required.

2) The audition may be a non-required call for Equity performers. Many Equity Theatres hold their required auditions locally, and are not required to hold any auditions in New York, Chicago or Los Angeles. Occasionally, some of these Theatres choose to hold extra auditions for Equity performers in those cities, or in other large cities outside their local area. These calls are not required by the Producer’s agreement with Equity, so the Theatre isn’t required to tell Equity about them.

3) It’s also possible that the audition is for an Equity show/season produced under an Equity contract that doesn’t require auditions. For example, the Guest Artist Agreement and Special Appearance Contract do not currently require auditions, nor do they require the employer to send casting notices to Equity.

Your regional Equity Auditions staff does their best, however, to make sure that all notices seeking Equity performers appear on Casting Call, regardless of whether or not the call is required.
