Amidst the psychedelic set and brightly colored potted plants, the cast of ON A CLEAR DAY YOU CAN SEE FOREVER started to assemble for the traditional Gypsy Robe® Ceremony when Stage Manager Lisa Iacucci gave the call to the cast and crew that the Equity folks had arrived carrying the robe. Michael Balderrama Reaches THE HEIGHTS

The excitement backstage at the Richard Rodgers Theater Sunday was palpable. It was March 10th, the opening night of IN THE HEIGHTS and the cast was gathering onstage for the Gypsy Robe® ceremony. As the opening had drawn closer, the buzz about who would get the robe had been swirling among the cast for days. The Gypsy Robe® is a long-standing tradition among the Equity chorus in the Broadway community. At each opening of a chorus musical, the robe is presented to the chorus member who has the most chorus Broadway credits. Receiving the robe is an honor and a symbol of accomplishment and the cast waited eagerly to hear whose name would be called.

Gregory Mitchell of MAN OF LA MANCHA received Equity’s Gypsy Robe® yesterday in an opening night backstage ceremony at the Martin Beck Theatre. Mr. Mitchell is no stranger to Don Quixote - he performed in the 1992 production of MAN OF LA MANCHA along with Sheena Easton and Raul Julia.
