AEA Announces 2012 Callaway Award Recipients:
Merritt Wever, Michael Shannon Receive Equity Classic Theatre Award
Merritt Wever and Michael Shannon have received the 2012 Joe A. Callaway Award presented by the Actors’ Equity Foundation for their performances in Soho Rep’s production of a new version by Annie Baker of Anton Chekhov’s UNCLE VANYA. The announcement was made by Arne Gundersen, President of the Foundation.
Merritt Wever, who played Sonya in the production, has appeared in THE ILLUSION (Signature Theatre); HATER (Ice Factory); WHAT THEN (Clubbed Thumb), among many other Off-Broadway productions as well as in regional theatres. She has numerous film and TV credits, including four seasons on Showtime’s Nurse Jackie.
Michael Shannon (Astrov), who plays Nelson Van Alden on HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, recently made his Broadway debut in GRACE. He has appeared in numerous Off-Broadway productions; was in a London production of KILLER JOE and has worked extensively in theatre in Chicago.
The award was established by Equity member Joe A. Callaway to encourage participation in the classics and non-profit theatre and honors the best performance in a professional production of a classic play (one written prior to 1920) in the New York metropolitan area. It included a $1,000 check plus an engraved plaque for each recipient, which was presented at Equity’s Eastern Regional Membership Meeting on Friday, January 11, 2012 at the Equity offices, 165 West 46th Street, New York City.
The Judges Panel includes: Joe Dziemianowicz, Daily News; Adam Feldman, Time Out NY; Harry Haun, Playbill; and David Rosenberg, Back Stage.
Previous recipients of the Callaway Award include Kate Burton, Frank Langella, Laura Linney, Lily Rabe, Liev Schreiber and, in 2011, Danai Gurira and Derek Smith.
