The St. Clair Bayfield Award
Jay O. Sanders Receives Equity Shakespeare Award
Jay O. Sanders has received the annual St. Clair Bayfield Award presented by the Actors' Equity Foundation for his performance as Bottom in the Public Theatre's Shakespeare in the Park production of A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM. The announcement was made by Arne Gundersen, President of the Foundation.
The award, which was established in 1973 in memory of Equity member St. Clair Bayfield, honors the best performance by an Actor in a Shakespearean play in the New York metropolitan area. The recipient received a $1,000 check and a crystal plaque at Equity's Eastern Regional Membership Meeting on Friday, January 11, 2008 at the Equity offices, 165 West 46th Street in New York City.
Mr. Sanders has previously appeared at The Public in STUFF HAPPENS, TAMING OF THE SHREW, KING JOHN, HENRY V, and MEASURE FOR MEASURE, as well as in other Broadway and Off-Broadway productions.
The Judges Panel for the award includes: Adam Feldman, Time Out NY; Harry Haun, Playbill Magazine; Michael Kuchwara, Associated Press, and David Rosenberg, Back Stage.
Previous recipients of Equity's St. Clair Bayfield Award include: Barnard Hughes, Carmen DeLavalade, Nathan Lane, Dana Ivey and Brian Murray.
